NSW: Hunter company wins $38m fire truck contract

A Hunter Valley company has won a hotly contested $38 million contract to build fire
trucks for the New South Wales fire brigade.

Varley Specialised Vehicles, based at Tomago near Newcastle, won the state government
contract from six other tenders from around Australia and New Zealand.

Public Works and Services Minister MORRIS IEMMA says the contract is a major coup for
Newcastle because it will boost local jobs and apprenticeship training opportunities in
the engineering field.

Up to 30 direct jobs will be created with another 100 jobs expected to be generated
in satellite industries.

Mr IEMMA says the contract is worth about $38 million for the initial order of 60 fire
trucks, which will be delivered over a three-year period.

He says NSW Fire Brigades have an option to order a further 20 vehicles in the following
two years which could make the contract worth $50 million.

Mr IEMMA says complete vehicles would be delivered at a rate of two a month from the
middle of next year.
