Black Americans explore Africa ties at summit

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast When civil rights activist Dick Gregoryinvited his children to accompany him to Africa nearly two decadesago, their reaction stunned him.

"They thought Africa must be the worst place on earth," he said.

He believes such ignorance continues to pose the greatestobstacle to understanding and better ties between Africans andAfrican-Americans, whose ancestors were divided by the slave trademore than 300 years ago.

"We represent a potent political force in the world if we canmarshal our resources and reunite," said Gregory. "But first, wehave a lot to learn about each other."
